Megalo Livari

The area includes the lagoons of MegaloLivari, Strongylo and Mikro Livari, the outfall of Xirias (Kallas) and the deciduous forest of Agios Nikolaos (designated as a Natural Monument). This forest (covering an area of 10 hectares and owned by the Church) alongside with two other forests (20 hectares.) near Megalo Livari, are remnants of an extensive riverine forest of the past that shrank due to logging and the expansion of crops.

Megalo Livari had been used in the past for extensive fish farming, but recently has undergone excavation, backfill and alteration of the inlet in order to intensify farming. There is also road construction, settlement expansion and an increase in tourism to the wetland. Moreover a hatchery unit has been constructed at the northern boundary of the lagoon.

According to the Ministry of Environment, Energy & Climate Change Megalo & Mikro Livari are of crucial importance: “The region is one of the few wetlands of eastern mainland and displays a variety of habitats. It is an important station for migrating and wintering birds such as vouvokyknos (Cygnus Olor with a population of 1,600 birds), the flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus with a population of 550 birds), chouliaromyta (Platalea leucorodia), chalkokota (Plegadis falcinellus) ducks, herons and several more water birds. In the area also lives a remarkable otter population”.
